What this means for operators
- Revenue concentrates at the top. With 89% of app revenue going to the top 10% of apps, a generic companion app rarely breaks through. Niche positioning and owned traffic matter more than being one more listing in an app store.
- Monetization per user is rising. Revenue per download more than doubled from 2024 to 2025, and AI apps earn more per payer than non-AI apps. The weak spot is retention, so fresh content and reasons to return decide lifetime value.
- The money follows the fan platform model. OnlyFans and Fanvue show members will pay for subscriptions, tips and custom requests at scale, and Fanvue reports its AI-tool users earn several times more.
- Compliance is now table stakes. Age verification, AI disclosure, crisis protocols and adults-only access are written into law in several U.S. states, the UK and the EU, with private rights of action in some.
WhiteLabelFans builds and runs white-label AI companion sites that handle this stack (companions, billing, age verification and compliance) for affiliates and operators, who keep up to 60% of total site revenue. See what the platform includes, how site earnings work and the niches you can launch.
How we compiled this
We gathered figures from market research firms, app intelligence providers (Appfigures, Sensor Tower, RevenueCat), company disclosures, published surveys, academic research and official government sources. We opened every linked page and confirmed the exact figure appears there before including it. Where only press coverage of a filing or report exists, we cite the press article. Figures are reported as published, with their year, and are not rounded or adjusted. Commonly repeated numbers that we could not trace to a working source were left out. Analyst forecasts are estimates, not measurements.
